Yea finished with a 19 point, ten rebound double-double in 22 minutes of action, and she was given valuable support from Mary Durojaye who had 13 rebounds to go with her 15 points as Britain again dominated the boards. Dominique Allen also pulled down ten rebounds, while Tamzin Barroilhet finished with eight points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Joana Benardeco was the only Portugal player to finish in double figures 14 points as Britain gave themselves a real chance of a top four finish in Group A and a place in the quarter-finals.
Britain coach Lara-Bercial was a happy man after seeing his team break their duck in the tournament: "It was a huge collective effort. I spoke to the team before the game about how important this game was. This game puts us back in the hunt. We can control our own destiny. We were awesome on the boards. 59 rebounds is a huge number - our effort was great!"
Barroilhet opened the scoring after 65 seconds , and Charlotte Stoddart jump shot saw GB 8-4 ahead at the midway stage of the first period.
Durojaye netted her second basket of the game to extend that lead to six, and although a Sara Djassi basket narrowed the gap, Leah Deehan drained from the Land of Plenty to send Britain into the final 90 seconds of the period with a 13-6 advantage before Djasse again scored to trim the British lead to five at the first break.
Yea doubled her personal tally to four with the first basket of the second period, but the game continued to be low scoring.
A single Stoddart free-throw followed by another Durojaye basket gave GB an 18-8 lead and forced a Portugal timeout with 6:49 on the clock.
That break clearly worked, and after a scoreless 90 seconds, a 7-1 Portugal run saw Britain's lead trimmed to four before Barroilhet hit a jump shot to break the tear.
Leah Dehaan also scored to extend their lead to eight points, however that was GB's final score of the half, as three pointers from Benardeco and Francisca Braga trimmed the lead to 23-21 going into the locker room.
Durojaye doubled that lead with a pair of free-throws, only for Benardeco to cut it to a single point with a trey.
Barroilhet and Durojaye kept Britain ahead and an Allen free-throw put GB 34-27 ahead with 3:25 remaining. However, that sparked an 8-0 run from the Portuguese to give them a 35-34 lead before Yea drained from downtown to send Britain into the fourth period with a 37-35 advantage.
The game continued to be a defensive slog in the final period, with Britain's rebounding keeping them in the game. The teams were tied at 42 just before the five minute mark when Durojaye scored off Deehan's assist and it took until the 1:40 mark before Portugal made it 44-44 after a Djasse jump-shot.
With the clock ticking down, Djassi was called for a foul, and Woods was replaced by Barroilhet for the final four seconds. She took the final shot of regulation time, but the effort rimmed out to send the game into an extra period.
It was in the overtime period that Yea really came good, draining a three with 3:45 on the clock, only to see Marcy Goncalves level from downtown seven seconds later.
Yea scored the crucial go-ahead basket with 1:21 on the clock before converting a pair of free-throws with 27 seconds left to double that lead.
A Portugal time-out followed, but Britain still managed to get the ball to Yea, and after being fouled by Goncalves, she calmly sunk both free-throws to wrap up the victory.
