However, although Sergio Lara-Bercial's team did their part by condemning the Austrians to their fifth straight loss and Hungary comfortably won 69-46, the Greeks went down 74-60 against group winners Belgium to consign Britain to fifth place in the group.
They will now play-off for 9-11th place. Their result against Austria is carried forward, so they are highly unlikely to finish bottom, and they will play hosts FYR Macedonia on Tuesday in their final game of the competition.
While he was pleased to round off the group stage with a victory, coach Lara-Bercial admitted that he was deeply disappointed not be progressing in the competition:
"It was a hard game, and it was difficult to bounce back from the heartbreak against Belgium. That was a game we should have won, and the girls did really well to bounce back from that. We came out strongly and worked hard to progressively build the lead. Austria didn't make it easy for us, they came to play, and we had to work hard to get the win," said Lara-Bercial.
"To put our results into perspective, Hungary only beat Austria by 16, and Belgium hammered Greece today. We've played well, but we've been a little unlucky. I don't have any regrets because I am proud of the girls, and they've given everything.
" If you look at last year's results for both the under-20s and under-18s, we'd have settled for two wins a week ago. But the thing that tells you how far we've progressed is the fact that girls are very disappointed, and feel they deserve to progress. Going out on a three-way tie is very disappointing, it's a bit like losing on penalties."
Britain were led by Tamzin Barroilhet who finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Harriett Yea and Kelsey Bardsley each added 11 points, while Mary Durojaye had a quiet time offensively with five points, but pulled down seven rebounds as Britain pulled down an impressive 78 rebounds to Austria's 44.
After losing the tip, Britain shaded a tight first period 18-14 before dominating the second period to lead 36-21 at half-time. An 18-14 third period saw the game effectively over at the final break with Britain 54-35 ahead, giving Lara-Bercial the chance to run his bench is a fourth quarter which the Austrians won 11-10.
