GB Standard Life's Drew Sullivan and the Newcastle Eagles retained the BBL League Championship at the weekend after the Sheffield Sharks lost 97-95 in a riveting game against the Worthing Thunder on Saturday evening.
Worthing, requiring a victory to improve their league position for the playoffs, took charge over the Sharks gaining at one point a 20 point lead. The Sharks, showing great character, battled their way back into the game, in part due to some impressive boards from ex-Eagle and GB guard Tafari Toney. The final four seconds for the game saw the Sharks miss an opportunity to clinch the win and keep their title hopes alive, giving the Eagles Championships.
Yesterday the Eagles travelled up to the Glasgow Rocks to round off their Championship winning weekend with a 78-91 victory. The Rocks had an impressive start scoring the opening eight points and led 26-21 at the end of the first quarter, but after a couple of lead changes the Eagles went into the locker room 42-49 up.
The third quarter saw a tug-of-war of point scoring streaks from both teams but the league champions took control in the final quarter not allowing their hosts to score for the first five minutes while racking up 10 points of their own. GB small forward Sullivan finished on 17 points.
