Kim Butler was the game's top scorer with 25 points, while Rosalee Mason added 23 and Kristy Lavin seven. Meanwhile three of Romania's players ended on double points; Svetlana Dragusin (22), Simina Mandache (17) and Maria Pascalau (16).
Butler got the game off of the ground with the first three baskets as Britain hustled the Romanians in the opening minutes, twice picking up rebounds and intercepting them but unable to capitalise and pull away from the visitors.
Lisa Hutchinson's pair from the freethrow line saw GB lead 10-7, but Romania responded instantly before Lavin got on the score sheet with a basket and one. Once again strong defence was the basis for the GB attacks, which was best demonstrated best by Lavin's rebound that eventually saw Mason and Hutchinson combine to add to Britain's 7-0 run, which was broken by a Romanian timeout prior to a Mandache lay-up.
Meagan Hoffman was brought into the action for Butler and her first contribution was to assist Mason in the final minute of the quarter, which GB took 19-13. Britain made 50% of their shots compared to Romania's 26.32%.
But the second period was a very different story for the hosts as Britain failed to score for the first four minutes and Romania's Dragusin added a pair of lay-ups. Mason soon broke the home team's deadlock with a lay-up and one before Harriett Yea then set up Butler to give GB a bit of breathing space. However, that would be the last time they would score in the final six minutes of the quarter. Romania not only went on to rack-up a 16-0 run but Lavin and Stef Collins both picked up their third fouls as GB entered the locker room on the wrong end of a 33-24 score line
Britain returned from to the court determined to make up the lost ground and they started through a Mason lay-up but Alexandra Uiuiu responded from the three-point line. Butler's drives and pair of baskets not only added to GB's belief but it brought them back within six-points, until Mandache and Uiuiu hit the target.
Undeterred Lavin and Butler gave GB hope, then when Mandache overcooked her shot from the three-point line Lavin picked up the rebound which eventually saw Butler take another basket and one. GB's 7-0 run brought a Romania timeout, yet it was Britain who returned to the floor with the initiative when Collins scored their first three of the night to level the scores 42-42, rallying the team's spirits and also the crowd's.
Hoffman converted one of two freethrows to give GB the lead again, albeit a minimal one at 45-44, which Mason further extended from the same line.
The home side opened the final quarter 49-48 and it see-sawed for the next three minutes, with even Yea's three-pointer unable to steady GB's nerves. Britain returned from their time-out to see Hutchinson drive to the basket and then Butler hit a jumper. With six minutes remaining Yea made it three out of three from the freethrow line as three players on the court, including Britain's Butler, had four fouls to their name.
Romania looked liked they would extend their lead to three points when Collins conceded the foul, but Ciocan missed both attempts. Dragusin, one of Romania's leading players, then fouled out with 3:51 remaining on the clock and Mason, who was hanging on nervously with four fouls, was on target from the charity strip to see GB 65-64 for the good. Butler too was on target moments later to extend that lead and then Mason ended up on the end of a play she started to give Britain a five point lead.
But the jubilation was short-lived as Britain lost both Collins and Mason as well as their lead. Hoffman replaced the fouled-out Mason and she added a basket but Romania eventually won 75-71.
