The European basketball icon just helped the Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA title, adding to his growing list of achievements.

Gasol was the most valuable player of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan when the Spanish captured the gold medal.

"I have finished (the NBA season) physically much better than last year, and that is a favorable factor," Gasol said to Antena 3 TV.

"Surprisingly, the Lakers have not put any impediments for me to be with my national team.

"Gold at the EuroBasket is something that I want, that I will go for and this year it would be a good opportunity to achieve that."

Spain are due to announce their preliminary squad for the EuroBasket on June 29. Jose Calderon, the country's starting point guard, has announced he will not play because of the need to recover from various knocks after his NBA campaign with Toronto.

Gasol and Spain captured silver medals at EuroBasket 2003 in Sweden and EuroBasket 2007 in Madrid.

Last year at the Olympics in China, Spain also won the silver medal.
