He is now based in Canada where the wacky star has become a big hit with Raptors' supporters.
Mensah-Bonsu believes his wise-cracking antics will be vital to help unify the GB team, which was only formed in December 2005.
And the 6ft 10in forward is using popular British comedian Gervais, who shot to fame in The Office, as his inspiration.
"I am probably the biggest Office and Ricky Gervais fan there is," said Mensah-Bonsu, born in Tottenham.
"I have never met him but that is one of the things I hope to do with my life. I would like to pick his brain as he comes up with stuff which I think is genius.
"I was in America when The Office first came out so I had never heard of it.
"But one of my brothers told me you have to watch this thing. When I watched the first one, I then watched the whole two series in two days.
"Now if I am ever bored I watch it again and to get to spend the day with Ricky Gervais sometime would be great."
Despite his light-hearted personality, US-educated Mensah-Bonsu takes his basketball very seriously.
He missed out on the NBA draft after going to George Washington University but has since worked his way to the top via short spells with the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs.
Mensah-Bonsu has blossomed following his move in March to Toronto, where he is set to pen a new deal when his contract runs out this summer.
